ARTIST STATEMENT
My goal with this work was to capture the beauty of humanity. I look first for a presentation that evokes an emotion or that is beautiful in design. As I draw the figure onto the canvas I simply let myself go, not worrying about representing the person in front of me. I like to narrow my focus to that which exists in each person, eliminating all the distractions. In this way my paintings are not portraits of an individual, but portraits of all of us. Hence the title, Reflections.
Artists Statement:
Tactile sensation is a key part of the human experience - we desire to touch the things around us, to view nature not from a distance, but to be a part of it. I believe that my sculptures offer a unique view of the world, blending the old world and the new, nature and man, precision manufacturing and hand building. Finding the right objects to work into the sculpture, their placement, the design, and finally the finish (a technique which I can't claim to be my own) - when all of these are combined the result is a sculpture that reminds the viewer of the earth, man and our destiny, both good and bad, together. My art is about the relationship between humans and nature and how one impacts the other, exploring that point where human beings and nature intersect.
I began my professional art career as a painter; two years later I began studying sculpture, initially with clay, thinking it would broaden my understanding of art. The first time I worked with clay, it immediately felt completely different than painting - many of the restrictions I feel when I paint were transformed with the different medium. I discovered what the creative process is about; it's about creating something that didn't exist before, about not being afraid of mistakes, instead, letting it take you to the place you need to be, whether you knew it or not.
My paintings are a medium that I continuously return to for the challenge that it presents. I love to capture the beauty of humanity, in an almost primal state. Just the figure, just the emotion, suspended in time. This is not an easy task. I have to stop myself from adding details I know exist, simply hinting at what I want to convey. The image simultaneously reflecting the simplicity and complexity of this life.
